      Other wood residue with unknown utilization potential includes: (1) the huge quantity of driftwood along beaches such as those in southeast Alaska, (2) wood not salvaged in build- ing demolition, and (3) the wood and wood-fiber portion of municipal waste normally.   Utilization of wood as feedstock has the advantage of its high and nearly ubiquitous occurrence and an established transport and processing infrastructure throughout the world. Besides the compact, partially crystalline structure of the cellulose in microfibrils, the dense lignin structure of trees provides a highly efficient steric protection.

      The wood pulp industry although well established vhen using spruce wood and other soft woods is not so successful with refuse wood as the raw material. Experiments are being conducted at Wasau, Wisconsin, by the Forest Service to dis- cover methods for the utilization of the waste from lumbering operations in that State as a source of raw. A joint Nordic research project on harvesting and utilization of logging residue was carried out in under the auspices of the Nordic Research Council on Forest Operations. This fruitful cooperation soon gave rise to related national projects in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, stimulating further research and producing practical.
